Bears blow another late lead, lose in OT to Tampa

Oh man, where do I even start after another painful, painful loss??

I mean I could talk about our offense not capitalizing on all the turnovers their defense forced and settling for field goals early in the game.

Or I could talk about the defense allowing Tampa to score 10 points in the last five minutes of the 4th quarter. Griese was able to complete any pass he wanted to. The Bears lineman looked exhausted against the no-huddle.

How about Rashied Davis dropping a beautifully thrown ball from Orton at the Tampa 40 yard line in overtime? Like Slim Shady used to say, can anyone besides Brandon Lloyd please stand up? (and catch a pass).

And to put the icing on the cake, what kind of call was that against Tillman in overtime? A personal foul penalty for jumping on the pile and pushing off the other team’s lineman?

Explain to me how that’s a penalty but punching someone in the nuts and swinging your elbow at their head is legal? That’s what the Tampa lineman Trueblood got away with.

Instead of Tampa punting from their own end zone with the Bears getting the ball back near midfield, Tampa gets an automatic first down and marches the ball all the way down the field and kicks a game winning field goal.

As my one friend put it, “an embarrassing loss.”

The Bears are now 1-2, and should be 3-0. When they just miss the playoffs at the end of the year, they can look back and circle today’s loss as the game that cost them a playoff spot.

There is not one single reason to say why we lost this game. If we make one more good positive play in a big situation such as for example a catch by Rashied Davis in OT, or if Robbie "Good as Gould" makes that 49 yard field goal, or if the offense can get one first down with three minutes to go and finish the game. But NO this team has no killer instinct to FINISH, and right now that is why the Bears are 1-2 instead of 3-0. Its very frustrating with this great defense we have this year.

You hit the nail on the head for the most part. This is the Bears. In the words of Dennis Green, "They" are "who we thought they were." This isn't a great team, great teams have great quarterbacks that can put together a late drive. This isn't a good team, good teams have defenses that don't squander 10 point leads with 4 minutes to go in a game. The Chicago Bears are exactly what everyone predicted them to be, they are exactly what we thought they would be: mediocre.

I don't know how you could call it a great defense Eric. A great defense would have found a way off the field in OT. Whether Tillman screwed that up or not is a mute point.

No love for Griese? It's gotta make the loss hurt even more to see a former QB who was on the Bears' roster just a year ago put up 407 passing yards and nearly set an NFL record in attempts, while the Bears' QBs continue to struggle...makes me wonder maybe it's not the quarterbacks after all.

Brian Griese threw the ball 60 something times, I do not expect many teams can win throwing the ball 60 times let alone with Griese doing the throwing. Erroneous mention of Griese, the Bucs got let off the hook by stupid mistakes. Griese throwing 45 quick slants was a result of Babich not making any adjustments.

nagel, it does make the loss hurt a little bit more that Griese led the comeback...but as brian mentioned, griese threw the ball 67 times.......your bound to put up big numbers throwing that many times.

If Tillman isn't called for that personal foul penalty, the Bucs are punting from their own end zone and the Bears get the ball near midfield...maybe they win the game their on a field goal, who knows

I would like some more in depth analysis simply giving a recap of the game doesn't give much room for reply. Let's get dicey, Orton or Grossman...Should Angelo be fired for not getting a playmaker, should Turner be questioned for certain play calls (mckey up the middle on fourth of week 2?)

lee, in my previous blog from last week I suggested Grossman come in for a couple of series to throw the deep ball and loosen up the defense for it....I got ripped on that. Orton threw a nice deep ball to Lloyd a couple of different times in the 2nd half of this past game.

I think he'll get better as the season goes on. Who do you think, Orton or Grossman?....Grossman is kind of like Jake Christenson, he had plenty of chances to cement himself as the starter and couldn't....Now Orton is getting his turn, just like Stanzi should be.

And Angelo should definetly take a lot of blame for the lack of a playmaker at receiver, their biggest playmakers on offense are their TE's. Hester should just stay at punt and kick returner. Then there's less of a chance he'll get injured.

Babich should also be blamed for getting soft the last 5 minutes of the game. How many plays in a row did he rush 4 and drop 7 in coverage. Griese had all the time in the world to throw the ball. And when they did blitz, the corners got burned on slant routes for 15 yard gains. Something's got to change

I just picked up B. Lloyd on my fantasy team because Wes Welker and Reggie Wayne have off weeks (I'm in first, if you're at all interested, because I have Forte).

So I'm loving the Lloyd to Orton hookup. It's almost as great as crack dealers to Marion Barry.

This isn't college football. Orton and Grossman are both 200x better than stanzi and christianson so i do not know why you are comparing them. In the NFL you cannot go with a two quarterback system, it just does not work. The Bears did the right thing by naming one guy and now they are in a tough situation, stick with Orton or ruin Orton again and bring in Grossman. I do not know which I would go with, honestly I think that is one of the toughest decisions the Bears have to make.
